Hello, Chattanooga. A new city map offers another way to explore a neighborhood question, while familiar public sculptures are getting attention along Main Street. Keep the Northgate closure and school dates handy, then choose a writing hour, a market or a weekend celebration. | ||||||||
Local services Today’s big storyWhat the new city map can show about your neighborhoodA new city map can help turn a broad neighborhood question into a more specific one. Chattanooga launched its replacement GIS Map Viewer October 12, bringing zoning, neighborhood associations, public-safety information, land ownership and city-service layers into one interactive platform. The city says it offers more customization than the older viewer and estimates annual savings of $17,000. The most useful starting point is a question about a place: which parks are near a chosen address, what zoning surrounds a parcel, or how an area has changed. The city describes a Near-Me tool that finds mapped resources around a selected point, such as recycling centers or nearby parks. Historical information reaches from 2016 to the present. Most layers now connect to live service data, according to the announcement, which should allow more frequent updates; that does not make every layer a real-time observation. The new platform also adds 3D modeling and layers for traffic, weather warnings, precipitation forecasts, stream flows, tree canopy, impervious surfaces and alternative fueling stations. Its mobile and desktop configurations differ. Choose the layer that addresses your question, then look at its own date and description before drawing a conclusion. These are the capabilities described by the city; the announcement does not promise identical information for every parcel or every device. For everyday tasks, keep the GIS department’s resource page handy too. It links a separate Property Information Map for garbage, recycling and bulk-collection days, as well as paving progress and cycling infrastructure tools. The Capital Project Tracker is explicitly labeled as of January 1, 2026, a useful date to notice before treating a displayed project status as current this morning. Open the resource that matches your task rather than assuming every linked tool is part of the newly released viewer. GIS questions can go to the city team at 423-643-6033.

Arts / Local change Worth a closer lookA new chapter for Art on MainMain Street’s outdoor art collection is getting maintenance, restoration and some new homes. The city says this fall’s work focuses on East Main between Market Street and Rossville Boulevard, with the Market-to-Broad section planned for spring. Art on Main began during the corridor’s revitalization in the early 2000s; caring for those pieces now includes deciding how people will encounter them in a changed neighborhood. Isaac Duncan III’s 17-foot stainless-steel Matriarch is being relocated from the sidewalk outside Alleia to the corner of Miller Plaza along M.L. King Boulevard. At Fire Station 1, Bruce White’s Scatter was scheduled for a three-week restoration beginning October 12, with new benches and playful site elements. The city plans completion in early November. Party Dress and Fortitude have been removed for off-site restoration, with possible neighborhood relocations still under consideration. A missing sculpture therefore need not mean it has left the public collection. For a future art walk, use the city’s project update and collection information to check which pieces are staying, moving or receiving work; a planned relocation is not a promise that its new setting is already ready today.
