Hello, Franklin. Today starts with a way to preserve a family voice, then moves into fall-break activities, a Friday music option and practical dates for the weeks ahead.
Try this Today’s big storyGive a family story a future beyond the dinner tableA familiar family story can become much harder to preserve when the person who tells it is no longer around to explain the details. Franklin’s Main Library offers a practical starting point this afternoon: an Oral History Workshop on Thursday, October 15, from 2–3:30 p.m. in the Meeting Room at 1314 Columbia Avenue. The free program is for adults 18 and older and requires registration. Special Collections will walk participants through recording an interview, storing the audio and using sample interview questions. Those are three separate jobs: capturing a voice, keeping the resulting file and asking questions that help a conversation develop. The workshop’s step-by-step format gives a beginner a place to start without having to design an entire family-history project alone. The actual signup form displayed 41 openings at our 8:49 a.m. Central check today. That is a snapshot of availability, rather than a reservation. Follow the registration link and complete the library’s process before going. The program description also notes that photos or video may be taken at library activities; tell staff at the event if you do not want to be photographed. For your own preparation, consider choosing one person and one manageable subject: a first job, a move to a new place or a tradition whose origin you have always wondered about. Write down what you already know and what you would like to ask. That is a suggested way to arrive with a useful question, rather than a library equipment requirement. This is an adult afternoon workshop, distinct from the morning fire-safety storytimes and Friday’s younger-child activities. Pairing the right program with the right person is the useful part of this week’s busy library calendar. Save the direct event page so you can check the registration and location again before leaving.

EventsThursday, Oct 15Fire Safety Story Time | 10:30 AM–11:00 AM | Main Library, 1314 Columbia Avenue, Franklin | Free The Franklin Fire Department joins the library for a special fire-safety storytime. The calendar lists two separate Thursday sessions; this is the later 10:30 a.m. occurrence. It gives families a short activity to share during FSD fall break. Friday, Oct 16Halloween Music & Movement | 10:30 AM–11:00 AM | Main Library, 1314 Columbia Avenue, Franklin | Free A story, songs and dancing fill this half-hour session in the Children’s Activity Room. The caregiver invitation matters: choose this as something to do together with a young child. The library explicitly permits attendance without advance registration. Pokémon Club | 3:30 PM–4:30 PM | Main Library, 1314 Columbia Avenue, Franklin | Free Meet other Pokémon fans, explore different Pokémon types and create a card for a character of your own. Children may bring their own cards for inspiration. The hour-long session in the Children’s Activity Room pairs a familiar interest with a creative project. Troy Kemp at Puckett’s Franklin | 7:30 PM–9:00 PM | Puckett’s Franklin, 120 4th Avenue South, Franklin | No cover; tips appreciated. Food and drink purchases separate. The venue’s dated listing brings Australian country artist Troy Kemp to the Franklin stage Friday at 7:30 p.m. Reserve for the performance date if you plan dinner around the music; the booking form defaults to the date on which you open it. Saturday, Oct 17Williamson County Writers Group | 10:00 AM–1:00 PM | Main Library, 1314 Columbia Avenue, Franklin | Free Share a complete or partial piece of fiction, nonfiction, poetry or an essay with a volunteer-led group. The focus is thoughtful critique and encouragement. Saturday’s meeting welcomes new members in the second-floor Learning Center; bring a piece you would like feedback on. Read with Lucy | 10:30 AM–11:30 AM | Main Library, 1314 Columbia Avenue, Franklin | Free Read with Lucy, a trained therapy dog, in a session designed for elementary-age children. Use the linked registration form before making the trip. Only one opening remained at this morning’s check, so the calendar listing alone does not secure a place. Sunday, Oct 18Jr. Chess Tournament | 1:30 PM–4:30 PM | Main Library, 1314 Columbia Avenue, Franklin | Free The library describes a friendly tournament against other children. Its registration form asks for the player’s skill level, with beginner, intermediate and advanced choices. Register the participating child before the event and keep the library confirmation with your afternoon plans. Monday, Oct 19Teen Chess Club | 5:00 PM–6:00 PM | Main Library, 1314 Columbia Avenue, Franklin | Free Practice tactics and play other teens in the library’s Monday club. The grade range distinguishes this from Sunday’s younger children’s tournament. A beginner can join alongside more experienced players, and this exact October 19 listing explicitly says no registration is required.

News NotesSchools One more school-day planning check Franklin Special District’s approved calendar puts fall break on October 12–16, including today and Friday. Its next listed districtwide professional-learning day is November 3, Election Day. Match childcare and work plans to your child’s actual district: an FSD date does not establish a closure for every school serving a Franklin mailing address. Education Prospective families can see FSD schools in action FSD’s November 6 open houses run 8 a.m.–1 p.m. at Freedom Intermediate, Freedom Middle, Poplar Grove Elementary and Poplar Grove Middle; Franklin, Johnson, Liberty and Moore Elementary run 9 a.m.–2 p.m. The Performing Arts Center welcomes visitors 8 a.m.–2 p.m. Use the full announcement’s school-specific times and confirm visitor procedures. Out-of-district enrollment has separate tuition rules. Local service A fax errand still needs another check Main Library’s current notice says public fax service is unavailable while staff work with a vendor. It does not give a restoration date. If faxing is the reason for your trip, call before heading to Columbia Avenue; ordinary opening hours do not mean the service is working. The notice concerns faxing, rather than a closure of the entire library. Music A second downtown music choice Puckett’s Franklin lists Radio Farm for Saturday, October 17, 7:30–9 p.m. at 120 Fourth Avenue South. The duo’s program draws on familiar radio songs; the venue states no cover and tips appreciated. Food and drinks are separate purchases. If dinner is part of the plan, ask about seating and choose October 17 in the reservation form. Community Teen craft time welcomes beginners The BackYARNians meet Sunday, October 18, 2–3:30 p.m., in Main Library’s Teen Room. The crochet and knitting club welcomes all experience levels and says no registration is required. Experienced crafters will be available for guidance. This can suit someone starting with a hook or needles as well as a teen bringing an existing project; the listing does not promise a take-home kit.
Plan aheadTransit Plan the PumpkinFest ride separately The organizer lists PumpkinFest for October 24, 10 a.m.–6 p.m., and October 25, 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Its Harlinsdale Farm shuttle costs $1 per person each way and ends at 5:45 p.m. Saturday and 4:45 p.m. Sunday. No pets, non-folding strollers, food or drinks other than bottled water are allowed on transit vehicles. Confirm event admission separately; shuttle fare is not an admission price.
The WrapA small project can make a good beginning: one conversation, one written page or one new skill. If you have a Franklin tip or a correction, use the local tip form so the editorial team can check it for a future edition.
