A major waterfront agreement leads today’s read, with the timing that matters for residents following Highway 41. Closer at hand, choose from an outdoor concert, a Saturday craft or fishing outing, and Sunday’s Children’s Day Festival. There are also practical school, dining and park-access notes.
Land and public space Today’s big storyWhat the Republic Tract agreement means for the waterfrontMount Pleasant’s October 13 Republic Tract agreement sets out a major future public-space purchase along Highway 41 and the Wando River. The Town Council approved settlement terms providing for a $28.5 million purchase of approximately 129 acres, including more than two miles of waterfront, for a passive public park. The purchase remains subject to due diligence and other closing requirements. The owner would retain about 56.25 acres, to be annexed into Mount Pleasant and limited to 95 single-family homes. The park land would be protected by a deed restriction, a conservation easement or both. The Town and owner would share construction costs for a public access road from Highway 41 serving the park and residential area, along with coordinating work that benefits both properties. For residents following the corridor, the useful distinction is between an approved agreement and a completed acquisition. The Town describes a 90-day due-diligence period and says closing could occur as early as April 2027. That is an earliest possible transaction milestone. It does not establish a park-opening date, a construction schedule or immediate public access. The next practical things to watch are acquisition progress and the Town’s promised updates on park planning and public access. Keep this on the longer-term local landscape list. For an outing this weekend, use an existing open park or one of the dated plans below; the Republic Tract announcement is about the future.

News NotesGetting around See the Rifle Range Trail plans October 29 The Town’s public drop-in runs October 29, 5:30–7:30 p.m., at Mount Pleasant Waterworks, 1619 Rifle Range Road. The proposed shared-use path would replace the sidewalk between Ben Sawyer Boulevard and Bragg Drive, reaching 10 feet wide where feasible. Design is underway; the December 2027 estimate concerns design completion. The meeting offers residents a chance to learn about the corridor before construction details are settled. Community Recognize a local history steward Nominations for the 2026 Cresco Historical Stewardship Award are due November 5. Individuals, groups and organizations can be recognized for preserving, restoring or sharing Mount Pleasant’s physical or cultural heritage. The Historical Commission considers quality, approach and impact on public understanding. Submissions use the Town’s OPAL portal, which requires an account or sign-in; the dated announcement links the process. Schools Whitesides families: report-card week is coming Mamie P. Whitesides Elementary’s calendar marks the week beginning Monday, October 19, as report-card distribution week. That is a week-level reminder for enrolled families, so check the school’s own communications for delivery arrangements. The same October calendar records the second quarter beginning October 13. Other schools may have different instructions; this reminder is specific to Whitesides. Eat locally Tonight’s posted lobster special Grace & Grit’s dated October 15 specials page lists three cold-water petite lobster tails with a choice of Chef’s Creation for $42, from 5 to 9 p.m. The restaurant is at 320 Wingo Way and recommends reservations. The listed entrée price gives dinner planners a concrete option; confirm the reservation and any additional charges with the restaurant. Its separate happy-hour window runs 4–6:30 p.m. Park access Shem Creek’s boardwalk remains the walking option The Town’s current Shem Creek notice closes the damaged floating dock until further notice while leaving the boardwalk and the remainder of Shem Creek Park open. Keep to the accessible areas and stay out of the closed dock section. The notice’s anticipated October 2 removal date is past; it does not establish a reopening or mean the work has been completed. Services A repair-assistance route for septic households Mount Pleasant Waterworks offers need-based repair or replacement assistance for eligible households in its service area. All three conditions apply: a septic-system home, no public sewer access and HUD low-income eligibility for the household size. Applying is free; selection follows an inspection. Recipients must sign the customer agreement and join MPW’s maintenance program, including annual inspections and regular pump-outs. Ask MPW about ongoing program costs before committing. Local history Hear Revolutionary Charleston at Wando Wando Mount Pleasant Library’s Listening Booth turns a restored pay phone into an audio-story installation. The current series features Dr. Nic Butler’s short accounts of Charleston’s Revolutionary War history for the American Revolution’s 250th anniversary. Listen during the branch’s actual opening hours; the calendar’s October and November ranges do not mean continuous access. The library also links the stories online for listening at home.
Families In the communityA free Sunday festival, with a parking planThe Town’s 39th annual Children’s Day Festival runs Sunday, October 18, noon–5 p.m., at Park West Recreation Complex, 1251 Park West Boulevard. Admission and all activities are free. Food and treats are sold separately, so families can choose their own concession budget rather than plan for a general admission ticket. The lineup includes carnival rides, inflatable slides, pony rides, games and live entertainment. The Novant Health Stage features local music and dance groups throughout the afternoon, with the full timetable on the Town’s event page. Choose a couple of activities that suit your household and leave room for breaks rather than trying to cover the entire festival. Free parking is available at Cario Middle School, Charles Pinckney/Laurel Hill and the professional complex on Salterbeck. Free shuttles operate throughout the event; the Town also points to the short walking cut-through beside the Cario gym. Check the official page before leaving for changes and individual activity requirements. Those parking choices make it easier to decide where your family will arrive and meet up.

Bring an adult for the children’s activities that require one, keep food costs separate from free admission and use the festival’s parking options.
