Arts Today’s big storyThree new exhibitions, one Sunday museum planSunday, October 18 brings three new exhibitions to Sarasota Art Museum at 1001 South Tamiami Trail. Presence, Chie Fueki: Painting the Floating World and Eszter Sziksz: Seeking all begin their public runs that day, continuing through April 4, 2027. A single museum visit will put photography, layered painting and an interactive installation within reach, with distinctly different ways to look closely. Presence draws more than 100 photographs by over 50 artists from Judy Glickman Lauder’s collection. The selection ranges from portraits and landscapes to photojournalism and city scenes, with work by artists including Gordon Parks, Diane Arbus and James Van Der Zee. Its scale makes it a substantial photography stop rather than a small companion display. The exhibition is co-organized by the Portland Museum of Art and the American Federation of Arts. Fueki, a Ringling College alum, brings together 25 years of painting, drawing and layered mulberry-paper compositions. The exhibition connects her Japanese and Brazilian heritage with images that move between recognizable daily life and abstraction. Sziksz, a Ringling College faculty artist, takes another approach: long sheets of wax paper carry embossed philosophical questions, with magnifying glasses inviting visitors to lean in and uncover the messages. Follow the installation’s guidance on interaction as you explore. Public galleries open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; tickets are sold until 4:30 p.m. General admission is $20, while ages 17 and under and museum members enter free. The museum lists additional admission benefits for eligible students, veterans and military visitors, with ID conditions where specified. Normal-hours museum parking is free. Saturday, October 17 has a separate member preview and ticketed talks, so use Sunday for the public exhibition opening. Food at the Bistro and shop purchases are separate from admission.

News NotesSchools and family services Tuttle students have free vision screenings next week Tuttle Elementary's October 9 parent notice says Vision To Learn will provide free screenings on October 20 and 21. Students flagged for follow-up will be offered a free eye exam and glasses if prescribed. The eye exam requires written parent or guardian consent, with information sent home to eligible families. Tuttle families can watch for that paperwork and contact the school at 941-361-6433 with participation questions. Roads and travel U.S. 301 paving closures are expected later in October FDOT's current U.S. 301 project notice separates the early work from later paving. Initial preparation and mid-October concrete work are not expected to require lane closures. Overnight closures are expected to begin in late October, 8 p.m.–6 a.m., for milling and resurfacing. Pedestrian detours may still occur during sidewalk work along the corridor from U.S. 41 to south of 10th Street. Check RoadWatch for changes before a time-sensitive trip. Community and schools A practical way to support local student science Sarasota County Schools' October 2 invitation seeks judges and community partners for its 2027 STEM Fair. Judges may choose virtual review on January 19–20 or an in-person round at Robarts Arena on February 11, 8 a.m.–12:30 p.m. Businesses and organizations can also offer donations, special awards or Family EXPO exhibits. The district's page links to separate judge registration and sponsor/exhibitor interest forms; no application deadline is stated. Development and public input Put Pineapple Avenue's design meeting on your calendar The city invites residents to learn about Pineapple Avenue roadway improvements on October 21, 5:30–6:30 p.m., at the SRQ Media Studio, 1565 First Street. You can view the conceptual roll plot, ask questions and give feedback on the project. Its current page says design is underway and that a construction timetable has not yet been set. Bring questions about the design while the team is still developing it. Getting around North Bridge nights: allow extra time FDOT expects one-lane-at-a-time overnight work on Siesta Drive’s North Bridge through the end of October, 9 p.m.–6 a.m., with dates and times subject to weather and work schedules. No weekend work is currently scheduled. Pedestrians and cyclists keep access with escorts through the work zone. Allow extra time or consider the South/Stickney Point Bridge for a trip that overlaps the work. Library services A county library closure for November 11 Sarasota County Libraries and the History Center will close Wednesday, November 11, resuming normal hours Thursday, November 12. The official notice names all ten physical branches, including Selby, North Sarasota, Fruitville and Gulf Gate. Put it on the calendar before arranging a library errand, research visit or meeting, especially if you normally use a Wednesday service. | ||||||||
County library update In the communityFruitville prepares to welcome readers back todayFruitville Library’s official notice schedules the renovated existing library to reopen at 10 a.m. today, October 15. At 100 Apex Road in Sarasota County, the refreshed space includes updated interiors, collaboration areas and a renewed collection. Thursday hours resume at 10 a.m.–6 p.m.; Friday and Saturday hours are 10 a.m.–5 p.m., and the branch is closed Sundays. The project continues beyond this reopening. The new addition’s Creation Station, Teen Room, green courtyard and technology-equipped meeting room will open at a later date. The announcement does not supply that later opening date, so plan today’s visit around the returning library services. The exterior book drop remains available, though processing may take longer while staff manually check materials in. If you received a hold notice during the closure, the library says it will keep the item until after reopening. Use the current official notice for changes before making a special trip.

Local food The Local FindWhat goes into a $20 Filipino boxTastes of the Philippines, at 1987 Ringling Boulevard, advertises a $20 build-your-box base that includes one protein, garlic fried rice, two lumpia and two turon. The protein list includes chicken adobo, Filipino barbecue skewers, pork belly lechon kawali, longanisa sausage and adobo tofu skewers. It is a useful lunch option when you want the components and base price spelled out before deciding. The included lumpia are pork spring rolls, so choosing tofu as the protein does not make the complete standard box vegetarian. Drinks, extra sides and add-ons are separate; the advertised base is not a tax-inclusive final total. The restaurant lists Monday through Saturday hours of 11 a.m.–9 p.m. and closes Sunday. Check the restaurant directly for the day’s choices, or use the pickup link on its own site.
