Hello, Scottsdale. Saturday’s Fall Festival comes with an easier way to reach Civic Center. Today’s read also sorts out hands-on science, movies, teen plans and the dates worth keeping on your calendar.
Weekend spotlight Today’s big storyYour Saturday festival plan starts with the ride thereScottsdale Fall Festival returns Saturday, October 17, from 5–9 p.m. at Civic Center,3939 N. Drinkwater Boulevard. This year’s larger event area brings game booths, magic, a DJ, trick-or-treating and crafts together in a free community evening. Costumes are welcome, and admission, activities and entertainment are free. Food trucks and a cocktail garden are also listed; plan to pay separately for purchases. The useful planning detail is the trolley. The city will pick visitors up at Paiute Neighborhood Center and Eldorado Park and take them to the festival. Nearby residents can walk to a pickup rather than making the whole trip by car. The announcement identifies the pickup locations without giving a detailed shuttle timetable, so check the linked city notice for updates before leaving. City departments will have interactive displays, giving visitors a chance to ask staff questions about local programs while enjoying the event. That makes the festival useful for a mixed-age group: a child can focus on the activities while an adult finds a city service or project they want to know more about. There is also a way to make Saturday a full local day without committing to two reserved activities. Civic Center’s morning communal-drawing workshop welcomes all ages but distributes a limited number of tickets before it starts. Mustang’s gardening session has its own seating limit. Pick one daytime program that suits your group, keep its separate venue and entry conditions handy, then leave the evening open for the festival.

EventsThursday, Oct 15Makerspace Lab Hours | 9:00 AM–12:00 PM | Civic Center Library, 3839 N. Drinkwater Boulevard, Scottsdale | Free Use the Civic Center Makerspace for an independent project, experiment with art and craft supplies, or learn about its tools. The three-hour open lab is a practical option for older students on fall break as well as adults. Bring a project if you have one. Owl Pellet Dissection | 2:00 PM–2:45 PM | Arabian Library, 10215 E. McDowell Mountain Ranch Road, Scottsdale | Free Examine bones, fur and feathers inside an owl pellet while learning how owls fit into the ecosystem. This is a hands-on science session with a specific age band and a 15-person limit, so arriving for a ticket matters. Movies that Matter: Hollywood Pushes the Envelope | 3:00 PM–6:00 PM | Mustang Library, 10101 N.90th Street, Scottsdale | Free Mustang’s Movies that Matter series screens Harold and Maude, the 91 minute film directed by Hal Ashby. The broader calendar block runs 3–6 p.m.; doors open at 2:30 p.m. Choose it as an afternoon film outing rather than assuming the whole three-hour block is the movie’s running time. Tarot 101 | 5:00 PM–5:45 PM | Civic Center Library, 3839 N. Drinkwater Boulevard, Scottsdale | Free Explore how tarot imagery has inspired artists and writers, then try simple readings as a prompt for reflection and creative work. The library lists this as a 45 minute teen session. It provides a later-afternoon option after the younger children’s programming. Friday, Oct 16Scottsdale Bakes | 10:30 AM–11:30 AM | Arabian Library, 10215 E. McDowell Mountain Ranch Road, Scottsdale | Free Friday’s baking club meets in person at Arabian Library and includes a cookbook swap. That October-specific instruction matters because the standing club description still calls the group virtual. Bring baking questions and cookbook ideas; ask the library about participation rather than following the generic virtual label. Teen Drop-In Gaming | 2:30 PM–3:30 PM | Arabian Library, 10215 E. McDowell Mountain Ranch Road, Scottsdale | Free Teens can drop in for Switch 2 gaming during this one-hour Friday session at Arabian. The published 12–18 age range makes this a distinct option from the preschool and elementary-age programs. Use the actual October 16 listing when planning; no additional Friday occurrence is assumed. Saturday, Oct 17Library Creatives: Communal Mark-making with Alexandra Bowers and Matthew Hunt | 10:30 AM–12:30 PM | Civic Center Library, 3839 N. Drinkwater Boulevard, Scottsdale | Free Artists Alexandra Bowers and Matthew Hunt lead a gallery walkthrough followed by shared drawing from plants, mirrors and other prompts. Bring a real desert-gardening question for the discussion. The library opens the doors at 10:40 a.m. for the 11 a.m. start; seating is limited.

News NotesSchools Two more days of district fall break Scottsdale Unified’s current district calendar keeps students on fall break through Friday, October 16. Use the district’s calendar for your own school rather than applying that date to every Scottsdale child: charter, private and other districts can follow different schedules. The library choices above give families several dated options for the remaining break days. Civic December 1 is the next date to watch for proposed reader safeguards Council’s October 6 direction calls for staff to draft automated license-plate-reader rules and return December 1. It includes work on independent audits, training, data access and vendor options. The proposed ordinance needs a separate vote before taking effect. Residents following the privacy and technology discussion can use the city’s current notice to track that next step. Coming up A Marshall Way opening celebration to save The official Old Town calendar lists French Crêperie’s grand opening for October 24 at 10 a.m.,4225 N. Marshall Way, Suite 2. That is a dated celebration to put on your calendar, rather than proof the new location is already serving today. Check the business’s current menu and operating details before planning a meal around it. Getting around Airport work brings overnight closures, then a full shutdown Scottsdale Airport schedules overnight runway and taxiway closures from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. October 18–23. A full closure starts at 9 p.m. October 24, with reopening scheduled for noon October 31. No aircraft operations are permitted during those closures. Coordinate any flight with your operator and current aviation notices; this is pavement preservation, separate from the Airport Master Plan. Planning ahead Save the library’s Veterans Day closure All four Scottsdale Public Library locations list an all-day Veterans Day closure on Wednesday, November 11. The current locations page also gives each branch’s regular hours, which vary. Keep the closure separate from ordinary Wednesday hours when planning a visit or pickup. Digital materials remain reachable through the library’s online services.
Local find The Local FindAn Old Town tasting-room stop with a mozzarella barLos Milics lists its Scottsdale tasting room at 7045 E. Third Avenue, Suite 101, with Arizona wines by the glass, bottle or flight and an open kitchen preparing hand-pulled mozzarella. Posted hours are 11 a.m.–9 p.m. Monday–Saturday and 11 a.m.–8 p.m. Sunday. Check current food and wine prices before ordering; this is a local discovery rather than a verified discount.
