Friday, October 9 · West Boca first

Hello, Boca Raton. Friday's picks come with the details that can change your plans: a one-day dining offer's purchase requirement, a last-day city comment deadline and separate free and paid nature programs. Nearby outings are labeled by their actual location, with booking and price unknowns made clear.

Plan Ahead

Book Ahead: Hoot & Howl  |  Friday, Oct 30  |  6 p.m.–8 p.m.  |  Daggerwing Nature Center, 11435 Park Access Road, West Boca  |  Free; crafts while supplies last

All ages. Save the date for a different seasonal outing: costumes, not-so-scary games and crafts, and learning about nocturnal creatures. The organizer asks visitors to bring a flashlight and bug spray for the nighttime boardwalk portion. This is an October 30 plan, not an activity happening this weekend. No reservation required. Check the county calendar again closer to the date for changes.

Events

Friday, Oct 9

Oktoberfest's opening Friday  |  Friday, Oct 9  |  6 p.m.–11 p.m.  |  American German Club, 5111 Lantana Road, Lake Worth  |  Paid admission; ticket prices and checkout fees not retrieved. Food, drinks and carnival costs are separate; on-site parking $20, limited.

All ages; nearby outing rather than West Boca. German bands, traditional dances and food make this a larger festival outing. This weekend's other hours are Saturday, October 10, 2 to 11 p.m., and Sunday, October 11, noon to 8 p.m. The event is rain or shine; no outside food or drink except the stated medical and infant exceptions, and service animals only. Use the organizer's Buy Tickets link and choose the correct date. Free off-site parking and shuttle locations are listed on its FAQ; availability requires confirmation.

Tonight: Rashomon on archival 16mm film  |  Friday, Oct 9  |  6:30 p.m.  |  Morikami Theater, 4000 Morikami Park Road, Delray Beach  |  Free for this screening; donations optional; daytime garden admission is separate

Japanese cinema viewers; mature themes, organizer age restriction not stated. A final-day reminder of yesterday's pick: the archival-film screening is tonight, with an introduction by Katharine Labuda. The film runs 83 minutes, in Japanese with English subtitles. Its reel-film presentation is the reason to choose this over streaming at home. Advance registration required through Get Tickets; remaining availability not guaranteed. Unclaimed tickets are released 15 minutes after showtime.

Match Box Down at Crazy Uncle Mike's  |  Friday, Oct 9  |  8:30 p.m.–11:30 p.m.  |  6450 N Federal Highway, east Boca Raton  |  Ticketed; current ticket prices and fees not verified. Food and drinks are separate purchases.

Tribute-rock listeners; entry age policy not retrieved. The venue lists a Matchbox Twenty and 3 Doors Down tribute for tonight. It is an east Boca live-music alternative to the larger Lake Worth festival, with a confirmed three-hour event window. This is a tribute performance, not an appearance by the original bands. Book through the venue's linked Eventbrite page; check remaining availability and entry rules before traveling.

Saturday, Oct 10

Saturday's Radical Reptiles at Daggerwing  |  Saturday, Oct 10  |  12 p.m.  |  Daggerwing Nature Center, 11435 Park Access Road, West Boca  |  $5 per participant; 3% credit/debit service fee, none for cash or check

Adults and children ages 5 and older. A naturalist-led encounter with resident reptiles gives families a close-to-home outing with a clear per-person price. For a separate no-cost option, the county lists the all-ages animal feeding and talk at 1 p.m., free with no reservation. The free talk does not include the paid noon program. Reservations and program participation form required; remaining places and end time are not listed.

The Local Lead

Dining find | Delray Beach | Today only

Novecento's 35¢ empanadas are an add-on to dinner, not a stand-alone snack deal

Novecento's anniversary offer runs today, Friday, October 9, at its Delray restaurant, 116 NE Sixth Avenue. The dated Downtown Delray listing gives a 4 to 11 p.m. window, with select empanadas priced at 35¢ each, a maximum of two per person, dine-in only and while supplies last.

There is an important purchase requirement: the restaurant's own website carries its official anniversary announcement specifying an entrée purchase. Its Delray menu also states that an 18% service charge applies to all bills; additional gratuity is discretionary. The promotional empanada price is not the total cost of your meal, and it does not make the whole dinner discounted.

If Delray dinner is already in your Friday plans, this is a precisely dated add-on to consider. Use the business's location page to check the menu and reserve a table, and confirm which empanadas qualify before ordering. We have not verified remaining table availability or the quantities left for the promotion. The offer ends tonight rather than continuing through the weekend.

News Notes

Last-day reminder | City of Boca Raton

Today is the sustainability-plan feedback deadline

Boca's official page still lists October 9 as the deadline to comment on its draft Sustainability Action Plan through 2030. The page links the draft, webinar, presentation and feedback form, and permits anonymous comments. This repeats the deadline briefly because it is now the final listed day, not because the city adopted a new plan overnight. The proposal concerns City of Boca Raton priorities, not an adopted countywide policy; an exact closing hour is not stated.

Local sports | FAU

FAU women's soccer wins 2-0 at North Texas

FAU's October 8 match report records a 2-0 road win, with both goals scored after halftime. The next match is away at Tulsa on Sunday, October 11, at 2 p.m. Eastern. The university says there will be live statistics but no video stream, useful to know before searching for a broadcast. This is an update on Boca's university team, not a suggestion to attend a local home game this weekend.

Know before you go | West Boca

South County Park's Cypress Pond playground remains closed

The county's current notice says the playground and swing area on Cypress Pond Loop remain closed for new shade installation. A reopening date is not given in that notice. Separately, the Amphitheater Circle restroom near its playground remains closed, with an expected October 12 reopening that depends on weather. These are specific facilities, not a closure of the entire regional park. Check the notice before planning a playground stop; an estimated reopening is not a guarantee.

The Wrap

Worth keeping handy: today's city comment deadline is a separate decision from your weekend plans. If you have a local opening or a worthwhile weekday event to suggest, send the desk the organizer's public link and exact date. A tip helps us start checking; it is not a paid placement or a guarantee of coverage.
