Boca has a small Halloween habit worth starting today, plus a full set of plans for the days ahead. Here are the details that make the difference: the right branch, the actual booking rules and the latest road dates.
Sustainability Today’s big storyFive places to give Halloween wrappers a second destinationBoca’s candy-wrapper collection opens today, October 14, giving households a month to keep their Halloween leftovers out of the regular trash. Through November 14, the city is participating in Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s Unwrap the Waves program, with designated collection bins at City Hall, Downtown Library, Spanish River Library, Gumbo Limbo Nature Center and the Children’s Science Explorium. The instruction worth remembering is simple: bring clean candy wrappers and put them directly into the designated bin. Skip the Ziploc bag or other plastic baggie. The city says staff have to remove those bags and throw them away, adding waste to a collection meant to reduce it. If your household starts collecting wrappers before Halloween, keep that final drop-off step in mind. This is a special collection program for wrappers that the organizer describes as otherwise non-recyclable. A dedicated drop-off bin is the destination; the program is not an instruction to put candy packaging into your household recycling cart. Loggerhead’s current partner list includes the City of Boca Raton, with the same October 14 to November 14 collection window. Choose the collection stop that fits an ordinary outing. Downtown Library and Spanish River Library provide two separate collection stops, while the nature center and Explorium can fit a family visit. At the Explorium, look for Murray the Candy-Eating Mummy. Check the facility’s access hours before making a special trip, and use its designated collection bin rather than leaving a bag outside. The city’s participation page lists the locations and the wrapper instructions together.

News NotesRoads SW 4th Avenue repairs target October 20–21 The city’s current notice proposes a northbound lane closure between West Camino Real and SW 8th Street from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days for asphalt repairs. Weather can affect the schedule, and on-site traffic staff will coordinate pedestrian detours. Put these dates on next week’s route plan and recheck the notice before travel. Getting around U.S. 1 has a separate traffic pattern to watch Northbound traffic between Camino Real and SE 5th Street/SE Mizner Boulevard is reduced to one lane through October 16. At U.S. 1 and Camino Real, intermittent northbound and southbound lane closures are listed for 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Friday. The southbound final lane pattern began October 12; the notice does not give it the same October 16 end date. Civic Early voting begins Monday Palm Beach County’s early-voting period runs October 19 through November 1, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Eligible registered county voters may use any open county early-voting site; Boca’s city page lists Sugar Sand Park and both city libraries. Check the Supervisor of Elections site for the complete location list. The deadline to request a mailed vote-by-mail ballot is October 22 at 5 p.m. Schools A closer look at Olympic Heights pathways A district profile published October 13 highlights Olympic Heights Community High School’s career academies, including culinary arts, early childhood education, engineering, finance and Marine Corps JROTC. These are existing pathways, not newly launched programs. Families comparing high-school options can use the profile as a starting point, then follow the school’s links for current program information and application requirements. Recreation Check your court before heading to the Racquet Center The city lists several temporary court closures through October 16 for material deliveries for a new canopy near Courts 25 and 26. The city warns of construction noise and reduced availability, rather than a shutdown of the entire center. Check your actual court reservation before Thursday or Friday play. Separately, George Snow Park’s basketball court is scheduled for resurfacing closures October 19–28. Resident services Save November 14 for a paper-and-electronics clear-out The city’s free drive-through e-waste and shredding event is set for 9 a.m. to noon at 6500 Congress Avenue. It is for City of Boca Raton residents, with noncommercial shredding limited to five banker-sized boxes per household. Check the accepted-electronics list first: CRT televisions and monitors, large appliances and household hazardous waste are excluded. A Boca mailing address alone does not establish city-resident eligibility.
Inclusive recreation In the communityPatch Reef’s accessibility program sets an October 23 openingPatch Reef Park will mark the opening of its Community Accessibility Program, or CAP, with a ribbon cutting on Friday, October 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. at 2000 Yamato Road. The city describes an inclusive and adaptive recreation initiative for children and families, with sensory-friendly activities, caregiver support groups, sibling socials and family nights among its planned offerings. The clubhouse’s Open Play concept is a relaxed drop-in space with sensory-friendly equipment. CAP membership is free to apply for and is available to individuals with a diagnosed disability; the city says members receive priority registration and sensory-room access. That membership statement does not establish that every future class or event is free. The city is gathering family needs and program interests through a survey, with registration updates to follow. Families can use the program page to learn what is planned and call 561-367-7034 with access or opening questions. A complete class timetable and an opening-event fee are not stated on the current page.

Arts & outdoors The Local FindA waterfront art stop across two parksWildflower Park’s Centennial art gives a familiar waterfront stop several reasons for a closer look. Laura Tanner’s restroom-facility mosaics use images of oars, rafts, bicycles and native fruits to tell pieces of Boca’s history. Nearby, Creos’ open-frame Mi Casa, Your Casa 2.0 swings add an interactive place to pause. Continue toward the Palmetto Park Road bridge, where four columns painted by Nadia Serenyi feature ocean life and native plants. The pedestrian connection beneath the bridge links Wildflower at 551 E. Palmetto Park Road with Silver Palm at 600 E. Palmetto Park Road. Both parks list weekday hours of 7 a.m.–11 p.m., and parking is free, though Silver Palm’s spaces are limited. Wildflower’s pavilion, benches and restrooms make it a practical place to linger. The installations are current attractions to include in a waterfront outing.
