A new robot universe at Spanish River gives a routine library stop a creative twist. Today’s edition also helps you choose a weekend plan, sort out two road schedules and get several useful November dates onto the calendar.
Local arts Today’s big storyA universe of small robots at Spanish RiverSpanish River Library has a new reason to linger beyond the bookshelves: Oliver Sarkis’s Spare Parts Universe, a free exhibition on view through November 20. It opened October 12 at 1501 NW Spanish River Boulevard, during regular library hours. The central characters are the Limbots, handmade robot sculptures assembled from mechanical parts, old electronics and found objects. These are small works, about a foot tall, with skeletal frames and detailed surfaces. The library’s exhibition announcement describes adjustable eyebrows that give the robots expressive faces and display cases made from broken mirrors and scrap. The interest is in how ordinary discarded objects become characters, rather than in any claim that the sculptures are working machines. It is an art exhibition you can fit into an existing library trip. Sarkis is an Armenian artist born in Montreal and now based in Boca Raton. His earlier work included three decades in diamond setting, and the library connects that background in careful handwork with the detailed robot forms. The sculptures anchor a wider creative project that also includes digital art, a card game and storytelling. The exhibition offers a focused way to encounter that world without needing to know those other projects first. For an easy visit, choose a regular opening period: both city libraries list Monday through Thursday hours of 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday through Sunday hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibition continues beyond the next month, but November 11 is a library closure. Pair the art with a book browse, or give yourself a specific short stop to look at the materials and expressions. Admission to this exhibit is free; the venue is Spanish River, separate from Downtown Library’s different exhibition.

News NotesSchools Boca Middle’s choice night is November 5 Families considering Boca Raton Community Middle School’s Pre-Medical Academy can attend its November 5 Choice Open House: tours begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the program at 6:30 p.m. The school says interested students must apply through the district even when Boca Middle is their home school; a lottery assigns available seats. Use the school’s page for program background and coordinator contact information. Arts The Maze closes tomorrow Downtown Library’s free Helier Batista exhibition runs through Friday, October 16, at 400 NW 2nd Avenue during regular hours. Batista draws on art exhibition catalogues, turning reproductions into new work and asking viewers to reconsider familiar images. If you have been meaning to see it, Thursday’s library hours run to 8 p.m.; Friday’s run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Getting around Two road schedules to keep separate U.S. 1 northbound between Camino Real and SE 5th Street/SE Mizner Boulevard remains reduced to one lane through October 16. Intermittent lane closures at Camino Real run 8:30 a.m.–4 p.m. through Friday. Next week, the city proposes northbound SW 4th Avenue asphalt repairs between West Camino Real and SW 8th Street on October 20–21, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Weather may affect that work. Recreation George Snow court work starts next week George Snow Park’s basketball court is scheduled to close October 19–28 for resurfacing; tennis court work is listed for October 26–November 3. At the Racquet Center this week, canopy-material deliveries continue to affect several courts through October 16. Check the particular court you plan to use before leaving; the notices describe specific affected areas rather than a closure of every recreation facility. Outdoors A native-plant stop for city households The city’s native-plant giveaway is set for October 30 at Wildflower Park, starting at 5 p.m. It is limited to City of Boca Raton residents, with one plant per household while supplies last. Keep that eligibility and supply limit in mind before making a special trip. The city’s Take Action page also lists its current sustainability activities and the separate November 14 e-waste event. School calendar Two November dates for the family calendar The School District of Palm Beach County lists November 3 as a teacher work/professional-development day with no school for students. November 11 also has no school and district offices are closed. These are district calendar dates; families using private schools or other calendars should use their own school’s schedule. Keeping the dates together now can help with childcare and work planning.
Community In the communityWhat the new Community Accessibility Program plansPatch Reef Park’s Community Accessibility Program, or CAP, will mark its opening October 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. at 2000 Yamato Road. The city describes a place for inclusive and adaptive recreation, with sensory-friendly activities, caregiver support groups, sibling socials and family nights among the planned offerings. Open Play is planned as a relaxed clubhouse drop-in environment with sensory-friendly equipment. The city is also developing resources such as sensory maps and social scripts. These descriptions give families a useful view of the approach, while the detailed program calendar is still to come. CAP membership is free to apply for and is available to individuals with a diagnosed disability, with priority program registration and sensory-room access. That membership policy does not establish free admission to every future class. Families can share their needs through the program’s interest survey or call 561-367-7034 about access, opening attendance and registration updates.
